Makerspaces for Newbies and Pros


Workshops will take place at the LEARN offices in Laval

This workshop is scheduled for February 19, 2016. Location and speakers are to be determined.The morning session is intended for those that are new to the concept of makerspaces. The afternoon is a more advanced session exploring the types of makerspaces and how making is connected to learning. Looking for inspiration? Check out some curated resources here.

Participants will receive a copy for their school of Worlds of Making: Best Practices for Establishing a Makerspace for Your School
Attend one or both of these sessions targeting the creation and development of makerspaces that enrich opportunities for learning. Multi-disciplinary teams are recommended.

9:00 AM Getting started with making, hacking and creating new ways to learn

What is a 'makerspace' and what can you do with it? Get started on planning what a Makerspace could be in your school. A guest speaker will discuss some of the tools, ideas and possibilities in this session.

This session is open to teachers, staff, administrators, and students. We highly recommend you bring a cross-curricular, multigenerational team to this workshop - please invite your librarian!

  • Invent to Learn to talk about getting started; what you might actually do in a makerspace 
  • Make Space when talking about what goes in to the design of a physical makerspace

 

12:30 PM Connecting making to learning

Congratulations! You have a makerspace in your school. Now... what else can you do with it? A guest speaker will discuss some of the tools, projects and possibilities for getting creative with the use of your makerspace. This session will be tailored to the needs of the participants, based on a pre-survey.
